Writing has become a source of joy for me. In high school and college, I struggled with getting my thoughts on paper. And while I was teaching school and doing other things, I didn’t really need to write, beyond a few lesson plans, very often. Then came seminary, graduate school. This is where my inadequate writing skills were laid bare. It was embarrassing.
In addition to learning ancient Greek and Hebrew, reading lots of textbooks, I needed to develop my skills in writing. This wasn’t an easy task. Papers seemed to take so long to write because I wasn’t skilled at the mechanics of writing. Thankfully, through the many papers that were required in seminary, I became comfortable with the task. I’m not sure how good they were, but know that they were good enough to get the assignments completed and pass my coursework.
Parish ministry involves a lot of writing: newsletter articles, program and teaching materials, letters, devotions, and sermons. Over the years, I’ve found that the more I write, the more comfortable I am, the better my writing has become, and the more I like the task of getting my thoughts on paper.
So now, I’m using this site to capture my thoughts. I invite you to come along with me but please be gentle and avoid using your red pen. Thanks!
